BAULE DOOR 1 |
|
Background / Origin |
Baule Door 1, Ivory Coast (wood nymphs) |
|
Description |
Baule doors are decorated or carved with mythological
figures of wood nymphs, leopards, crocodiles, birds,
bowls, weapons sometimes diviner’s gongs mallets and
patterns all for protection. The doors used to inner
rooms were always on view and fortunately do not show
the wear of exposure to the harsh African climate. Also
the craftsmen were not content to produce a functional
object, be it a chair, a bowl or a door, it also had to
show great artistic skill, precision and beauty.
