|
Background / Origin |
Mali, Dogon granary shutter doors |
|
Description |
The millet granaries of the Dogon tribe carved their
doors with rows of stylized figures each referring to
Dogon mythology or to ancestor worship. In the past,
granary doors had carved wooden bolts or locks which
were also decorated with mythological figures. The Dogon
were understandably concerned with the safekeeping of
their grain supplies hence the solid doors and good
strong locking devices. |
