Name DOGON 2, Granary Shutter Door
Background / Origin Dogon, Mali Granary Shutter Door
Description The millet granaries of the Dogon tribe carved doors with rows of stylized figures each referring to Dogon mythology or to ancestor worship. These small doors protected the window like opening into the family’s grain storage building In the past, Dogon doors had carved wooden bolts or locks which were also decorated with mythological figures. The Dogon were understandably concerned with the safekeeping of their grain supplies hence the solid doors and good strong locking devices.
