Description |
This very beautiful Azande figure with a dark patina,
crafted from hard wood, with naturally aged fibre cords
around the neck and waist, stood on the elders, Avungara
table during tribal meetings. The Avungara are the
ruling class of the Azande The Azande mainly reside in
Sudan and the northern part of Zaire. (D.R.C.). Class
structure is very clearly defined. Ruling class the
Avungare, middle classmen the Mbomu and Auro the
commoners. Considering they have been at war since the
18th century with the Manbetu and despite this conflict
the art work of the two cultures, Manbetu and the Azande
display great similarities. It also mustn’t be forgotten
the Azande believe space ships landed in their country !
