LUBA TWINS |

Background / Origin |
LUBA/Tabwa, twin figures Zaire (D.R.C.) |
|
Description |
A beautiful set of twin figures like these are quite
difficult to find. The Luba/Tabwa carvers mainly produce
utilitarian objects, combs, spoons, bellows and drums
etc. Twin figures and other sculpted ancestral figures
are produced mainly for the personal collections of the
Chiefs. The villages are headed by Chiefs who inherit
their positions matrilineal, and justify their power by
tracing their descent back to the original founders of
Luba/Tabwa society. This is often shown through the
collection and display for everyone to see of ancestor
figures and twins (believed to have supernatural
powers), born through the ages, all representing the
Chiefs familial lines. Similar to the Yoruba Ibeji twins
their birth is the cause of great rejoicing. It is
believed twins have a combined inseparable soul and must
always be together. Upon the death of both twins, two
figures will be carved so as to commemorate their
passage. These sculptures avert evil, strengthen family
love and illuminate the pathway through the valley of
immortality. In return they must be treated with respect
and offered tokens of affection. |
