Description |
Although this is a 20th century fetish, simply carved
for a young boy with poor eyesight and hearing. It still
retains a power as seen with the famous Baule Mbra
sculptures that have found their way into museums
throughout the world. The Mbra monkey figures are used
by diviners mainly at their sacrificial offerings for
protection. The Mbra monkey figures are among the most
frightening and powerful of Baule sculptures, used very
often as a fetish This particular one was used again by
a diviner in a ceremony calling forward spirits and
ancestors to protect the owner’s sight and hearing and
was placed by his bed when he slept. When the boy grew
into a man a new carving was made for him One can see
stains and markings on the monkey were medicines and
offerings were made. |
