Description |
In the 16th century, the Kuba migrated from the north
and located along the Sankuru River. At the height of
the Kingdom during the mid 19th century, they produced a
magnificent amount of the most beautiful art pieces.
When a king was leaving this world to join his
ancestors, his royal statue, his NDOP was placed beside
him ready to receive his spirit. After his passing,
during the initiation of the new king, the same Ndop
would be placed beside the new king so he could receive
the spirit of the former ruler. The Kuba believed that
the old king and his predecessors would be reborn
through the present king. The tradition of Ndop statuary
began during the 17th century by King Shamba Bolongongo.
There are records of 124 Kuba kings with only 19
original Ndop surviving. It is believed this worn and
slightly damaged piece is an original Ndop. |
