Name MASK 6 Ivory Coast
Background / Origin MASK 6, (with kaolin) Ivory Coast
Description No one produces a wider variety of masks than the people of the Ivory Coast. Masks from the Baule, Guro, Yaure, Dan and Senufo, all very different in design, so distinctive using a wide variety of materials and colours. Pieces highly refined and masterfully carved or produced by apprentices who are just learning their craft. The masks represent the souls of deceased people, lesser deities, or even caricatures of animals. Masks for initiations, weddings, funerals, judicial proceedings, law enforcement activities, ceremonies to ward off witches and sorcerers, agricultural ceremonies, or merely for entertainment, all play a role in the many groups of the Ivory Coast.
