TSCHOKWE MASK, Angola |
|
Description |
This mask although quite small seems charged with power
with its scarification patterns, filed teeth, deep set
dark surrounds to the eyes and cruciform markings. It is
an excellent example. The Tschokwe tribes are known for
their high level of craftsmanship and aesthetic values.
According to Tschokwe belief, ancestral spirits play the
crucial role of providing for living descendants. The
ancestral characters also protect the peoples from
intruders or evil wanga supernatural elements. The
Tschokwe people influenced the art of many neighboring
tribes, including the Lunda, Mbunda,Lovale and Mbangani.
The Mukanda Masks play a role in male initiation. The
mukanda is an initiatory institution through which
religion, art, and social organization are transmitted
from one generation to the next. Mukanda training lasts
up to 2 years and the young boys are taught history,
traditions, secrets of the association and the art of
making and wearing the masks. |
