Description |
Important characteristics of Guro art is the skillful
bringing together of the human and animal form. As seen
clearly on the many masks that are produced for
sacrificial gatherings, funerals and celebrations of the
Guro. To honour protective spirits called zuzu. Notable
features are the almond shaped eyes, rounded forehead,
finely sculpted nose and mouth with small but pouting
lips. Masks are normally colourful, painted or coated
with natural dyes. Birds, usually the horn bill or
yangaleya and animal designs that are incorporated into
the mask are believed to have magic powers of
protection. In this case to protect human lives.
