Description |
Important characteristics of Guro art is the skillful
combination of human and animal forms, as seen quite
clearly on most of their masks. Other notable features
are the almond shaped eyes, rounded forehead, finely
sculpted nose, and mouth with small but pouting lips.
The masks are normally colourful painted or coated with
natural dyes. The Guro Mask is used and honoured during
sacrificial gatherings, funerals and celebrations. They
honour protective spirits called zuzu and these spirits
are housed in shrines. The birds or animals used as part
of the mask, the hornbill, yangaleya, monkeys etc hold
spiritual powers to protect human life. |
