Background / Origin |
MBIRA, (thumb piano) Zimbabwe |
|
Description |
Sadly very few old mbiras exist in Zimbabwe. These art
forms used as musical instruments when played (plucked)
create a certain poetic atmosphere when they are used to
accompany songs at ceremonial functions, including
dance, rituals and story telling. Modern mbiras in
Zimbabwe and all types of thumb pianos are widespread
throughout Africa. It is a typically African instrument
with sound holes, sound chambers and metal keys that are
played with the thumbs. This mbira is a rare old piece
in good condition, with a sound hole and metal keys.
