Description |
The beautiful bronzes of the Ife and Benin kingdoms now
known as Nigeria, show incredible artistic and technical
accomplishment, all these objects of great admiration
have been copied again and again through the centuries
and are still to this day produced by the lost wax
method for collectors all over the world. The powerful
ancient Benin kingdom was founded by the son of an Ife
king in the early 14th century AD. The art of bronze
casting was introduced around the year 1280 Heads like
this one of a young king / prince were placed on an
alter and functioned as a tribute and contact to
ancestral spirits and above all to exalt the king, the
queen mother, the princes and royal household at
important events. |
