Background / Origin |
KUBA Wooden cosmetic box |
|
Description |
Very fine, quite old container used usually for the
storage of red tukula for body care, made exclusively
for the Bushoong clan. They very often held other
cosmetic products and accessories, like razors.
Containers like this were in effect very luxurious
toilet kits. The Kuba are characterized by their
prolific carved ornamentation, which saturates all
surfaces. These are often geometric patterns in low
relief and interwoven designs imitating basketry, the
knots of fishing nets, or braids, as one can see some
representation on this box of high aesthetic quality.
These designs were carved freehand, and adapt to the
round form of the object, with the kind of precision
that goes into jewellery. |
