Name LUBA STOOL
Background / Origin Unusual Luba Stool, Zaire (D.R.Congo)
Description The Luba of Zaire (the creators of remarkable sculptures) made most of their pieces for their kings and important chiefs, who defined their power by the display of prestige objects during important ceremonies. Stools were among the most important of these objects. The female caryatid figure, which also symbolizes the power of the woman that “carries” the high ranking male, is characterized by its great expressivity; the gaunt body, the face taut with contained stress, wistful mouth, blank gaze – framed by hands made disproportionately large in order to carry the seat This prestigious seat would only be brought out on special occasions, the rest of the time looked after by the first wife Stools are among the most prized items in Africa, and this kind would only have been found in the home of chiefs.
