Description |
An essential and very important daily activity for Dogon
women is using the pestle and mortar to pound the millet
that is a staple food of the Dogon diet. There are also
other very interesting connotations - Millet and other
cereal grains feature prominently in Dogon beliefs as
the origin of the universe and the beginning of mankind.
Also if a Dogon woman’s mortar is well worn and the
pestle has worn down because of extensive use. This
special woman is treated with great dignity, honour and
pride because of the endless hours of work she has
performed for the benefit of her family, and community.
Worn down pestle’s are often placed on the family
ancestral alter by the family in recognition of the work
performed in a lifetime. A means of preserving
indefinitely the words of gratitude This rather special
mortar is worn, damaged and repaired having seen many
hours of hard work. |
