Description |
Pipes in Cameroon were regulated by a strict code:
geometric patterns were good enough for the common man,
but high ranking members of the brotherhoods could
indulge in zoomorphic imagery, especially if the animals
represented were related to their totems. Only the
highest ranking chiefs and members of the royal family
were allowed to have prestige pipes with anthropomorphic
forms as bowls and motifs Prestigious pipes were not
actually used for smoking. Dignitaries would only hold
them close to the mouth during official ceremonies
indicating social status and power. |
