Description |
The Bobo mask represents flying spirits from the bush.
These spirits have no natural shape and hence are
portrayed in abstract geometric form. The spirits
embodied in the masks bless the families that own the
mask and dance it at festivals. Many patterns shown on
different Bobo have meanings known only to the initiates
of the society that wears them. The checkerboard design
is always placed on some part of this large mask. The
checkerboard of black and white squares represents
separation between good and evil and right and wrong The
masks perform when the moon shines. Representing the
life force of the forest, plant life and fields.
