BUNDU RITUAL MASK |
|
Background / Origin |
Mende tribe Sierra Leone |
|
Description |
The Sande Secret Society (for women only) found
throughout Sierra Leone use the helmet type mask to fit
over the head of the women for Society functions,
initiations, and festivals. Only women are the masked
dancers. The Sande Society teaches young women the
skills and knowledge they will need as adults. During
their training, the young initiates ‘die’ ritually and
are reborn as new human beings with new names. The
superstructure of the mask is as important as the face.
With forms showing snakes, birds, royal figures,
stylized female labia and the male penis The Sande
Society is very controversial……see REPRESENTING WOMAN:
SANDE MASQUERADES OF THE MENDE OF SIERRA LEONE by Ruth
